Tucked into the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, Grass Valley might be best known for its storied Gold Rush past—but it’s also home to a thriving and often-overlooked wine scene rooted in heritage and bursting with character. Located in the Sierra Foothills AVA, this high-elevation gem is a treasure trove of family-run wineries, unique varietals, and tasting experiences that feel like a step back in time—and a leap into the future of California winemaking.

Where Gold Rush Meets Grape Rush

The Sierra Foothills AVA is one of California’s most geographically diverse wine regions. Varied elevations and microclimates allow for a wide range of grape varietals—from bold Zinfandel to elegant Chardonnay and increasingly rare Italian reds. Grass Valley is a proud part of this landscape, reviving its 19th-century winemaking traditions with a new generation of passionate vintners.

You'll find everything from Chenin Blanc and Dolcetto to Petit Verdot, Nebbiolo, and even Nero d’Avola, all thriving in the region’s granite-rich soils and sun-soaked slopes.

First Stop: Nevada City Winery

Just a short hop from downtown Grass Valley, Nevada City Winery is one of the oldest operating wineries in the area—and it's making some seriously compelling wines.

Try This:

  • Dolcetto: Complex and vibrant with raspberry, cherry, cedar, and a subtle flirtation of carob. Bright fruit, structured tannins, and low acidity make it true to its Northern Italian roots.

  • 2021 Chenin Blanc: Crisp, refreshing, and a perfect start to your Sierra Foothills journey.

Second Stop: Gray Pine Vineyard & Winery – Penn Valley

Down the road in nearby Penn Valley, Gray Pine Vineyard & Winery is a small but mighty operation producing just 350 cases per year. They grow their own grapes and focus on food-friendly, Bordeaux-style wines.

🍷 What to Sip:

  • PennRidge Bordeaux Blend: A masterfully balanced red made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc, and Malbec.

  • Classic structure with balanced acid and tannins—perfect for pairing with a rich dinner under the stars.

Third Stop: Montoliva Vineyard & Winery – A Taste of Tuscany

Montoliva is more than a winery—it’s a love letter to Italian varietals and old-world techniques. Owner Mark Henry is the vineyardist, winemaker, and self-described Garagiste, crafting deeply personal wines that honor the traditions of Montalcino, Tuscany.

🍇 Unique Finds:

  • Sangiovese, Aglianico, Nebbiolo, Negroamaro, Falanghina, Dolcetto, and more.

  • A mix of French and Slovakian barrels adds complexity, while long barrel aging (up to 3 years!) gives each bottle depth and softness.

💡 Pro Tip: Take the vineyard walk, explore the herb garden, and enjoy an intimate look at how small-batch winemaking should be.

Bonus Stop: Edio Vineyards at Delfino Farms

Technically just outside of Grass Valley, Edio Vineyards in Camino is well worth the detour. While the vibe here leans more modern farmhouse than frontier outpost, the wines still reflect the rugged terrain and artisanal approach of the region.

Expect elegant reds, thoughtfully curated tasting flights, and a gorgeous setting perfect for a picnic or golden hour glass.

Why Grass Valley Belongs on Your Wine Map

Grass Valley proves that California wine is far more than Napa or Sonoma. With its gold rush roots, diverse terroir, and passionate winemakers, this tucked-away region offers an intimate, educational, and delicious escape for anyone seeking wine with soul.

So next time you want to get off the beaten path—head for the hills. The Sierra Foothills, and Grass Valley in particular, are waiting to pour you a glass of something unforgettable.
